New Data from Job Seekers on Inclusively’s Platform Reveals Workers Do Not Feel Comfortable Requesting Accommodations

The findings emphasize the need for employers to improve how workers obtain the support they need to thrive

St. Louis, MO – October 8, 2024 – Inclusively, the leading technology platform providing companies with a universal approach to supporting employee needs around workplace benefits, resources and accommodations, today launched new research, The State of Workplace Inclusion & Accommodations. The data highlights the fact that employers need to act now because the next generation of the workforce is entering the job market everyday with a significantly higher likelihood of needing support to thrive in their job. This is a workforce planning issue that is urgent for employers to start solving for now and the data from Inclusively’s platform validates this.

Inclusively surveyed nearly 600 U.S. job seekers on its platform. Although these job seekers are confident citing their need for support, this is in stark contrast to the national average for disclosure in the workforce, which is only 3 to 5%. Furthermore, the data shows that up to 30% of today’s workforce qualify as having a disability under The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), but choose not to disclose.

“Insights from job seekers on our platform underscores how important it is for employers to embrace that more and more people are identifying as having a disability,” stated Charlotte Dales, CEO and co-founder of Inclusively. “Therefore, companies need to standardize and streamline their accommodation processes for all employees so that it’s not separate from other offerings they have invested in. The bottom line is that in addition to inclusion, this is about workforce planning and we want everyone to feel included by providing them with the tools they need to be productive,” continued Dales.

By surveying job seekers on Inclusively’s platform, it reveals that:

  • Mental health and learning disabilities like ADHD or neurodivergence top job seeker’s disabilities. When asked which disabilities job seekers identify with, 49% cited learning disabilities and 48% mental health. And job seekers confirmed that they would want/need accommodations to be successful in a job.
  • Disclosing a disability is not the norm due to a lack of feeling safe. Forty-three percent of job seekers refrain from disclosing their disability because they don’t feel safe and almost half (46%) who do disclose say the process is difficult.
  • Anonymity is cited by job seekers. Seventy-seven percent of job seekers said they would like to start the process of receiving support and accommodations via anonymous tools – validating the need for companies to offer multiple points of entry into the disability community to meet people where they are and offer a pathway to reduced stigma and self-ID.
